Do you remember the term Xeriscaping? Of course you do, but how often have you, as a Landscape Professional or Property Owner, heard the term used lately? Odds are: not much!

Why not revisit the Xeriscape concept and see how it fits in with Sustainability.

The term Xeriscape was coined in 1981 by the Denver Water Board. Jim Knopf, ASLA, is a renowned expert in the design and implementation of Xeriscape, and has been at the forefront of the “movement” since the 1980s in Boulder, Colorado. Mr. Knopf presented a seminar at the 2009 Pro Green Expo titled: Xeriscape Myth Busting: Some Troublesome Misconceptions”. In his presentation he dispelled myths such as Xeriscapes are dry only; are all rock and gravel; are lawn-less; cost to much to build and maintain; a single-design style; need plants you cannot get; and need more water to get started. There are countless examples in the western United States that decidedly prove Mr. Knopf’s points. I have personally seen several of Mr. Knopf’s Xeriscapes and can easily say that they are very aesthetically pleasing and functional landscapes. Its safe to say that Mr. Knopf was practicing Sustainability long before the term became a household word!

One of the main points made in the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building manuals is Water Efficiency. What is interesting is, they spend an inordinate amount of time discussing sustainable green strategies for buildings but a relatively small amount to time on outdoor water use. They do mention plant selection, reduction in irrigation and Xeriscaping techniques, but do not fully describe what Xeriscape really means.

Here are the 7 commonly accepted principles of Xeriscape:

1. Planning and Design- Xeriscapes should be planned and designed with water zones, where high use areas receive more water that low use areas.
2. Efficient irrigation systems- Efficient irrigation applies water where it is needed, not where it will be wasted and benefit only weedy species.
3. Use of mulch- Mulch provides a cover for the soil, whereby, reducing evaporation, soil temperature, and erosion. It also limits weed growth and competition for water and other nutrients.
4. Soil preparation- Loosening of the soil and the addition of appropriate soil amendments improve the fertility and water-holding capacity of planting areas.
5. Appropriate turf- Limit turf areas to useful spaces and determine which grasses will best serve the project’s needs. The use of fescue or a fescue-bluegrass mix is often appropriate for these areas.
6. Water-efficient plant material- Today there are numerous species of attractive plants available for use in water-wise landscapes. Xeric plants depend on the formation of extensive root systems to effectively gather water for proper growth. Sometimes they look rather unimpressive in the nursery, but they rapidly become beautiful plants in the landscape.
7. Appropriate maintenance- The landscape design will determine the maintenance required for any landscape. All gardens require some maintenance: pruning, removing rubbish blown into the landscape, occasional weeding, pest management, and checking that the irrigation system is functioning properly.

I believe that Xeriscapes, when they are properly designed, built and maintained are water-conserving in both dry and wet years. Remember that Xeric does not necessarily mean dry within the context of landscaping. Xeric means the water-efficient and “water-wise” use of the resource. Xeriscapes are often more aesthetically attractive and better suited for their surrounding environment that their water-gulping counterparts.

In this way, promoting Xeriscape in the practice of landscape design and construction is directly encouraging Sustainability. As Sustainability is the latest “buzz word” and has real ramifications on the environment, Landscape Professionals and homeowners everywhere can benefit by promoting Xeriscaping, and the core principles of Sustainability, in their daily lives.
