Electric Air Compressors and How They Work By Jerrico Usher Platinum Quality Author

An Electric Air Compressor is a popular choice both in homes and businesses. The most common type of compressor you will encounter is the reciprocating piston air compressor. This is powered by an electric motor which is activated when the unit is turned on. When the motor is engaged, the air compressor pump turns and compresses air which is then stored in a tank.

The motor on an electric air compressor is specifically designed for this use as it has a high torque capacity. This is required to allow the unit to pump at start up. The box that is located on top of the motor houses capacitors which assist the motor during the start up process. The capacitors continue to work the entire time the machine is running. If these capacitors fail, the motor will stop working properly and eventually will fail.

An electric air compressor also features a non return valve which allows air to flow in only one direction, into the tank. This stops the air from pressurizing back into the tank. This is of importance when the cycle begins again and whenever the electric motor cuts on. Thanks to this addition to the design of compressors, the motor’s initial start up is not hindered by back pressure. Many motors fail as a result of a faulty non return unit in a compressor as this places additional stress on the motor and capacitors when the unit is started up.

Other important parts of this style of compressor include an electric pressure switch commonly found on portable compressors. This switch is operated by tank pressure and connects the main current to the motor. A preset level is built into the machine and, when the unit reaches this level, the switch is activated mechanically. Upon activation, the compressor connect the current to the motor. Compressed air is then pumped until the desired pressure is reached. Once this target has been reached, the switch activates again and the current is disconnected from the motor. The compressor then shuts off.

The pressure release tube is a long thin pipe or tube which connects the non return valve and the pressure switch. Often you will hear this part release a small amount of air when the motor cuts off and the pump stops running. This is a normal feature of operation as it help to depressurize the pump. This results in less drag on the motor during start up so it is an integral part of the machine. When choosing a compressor it is important to know how it works to ensure you purchase the right tool for the job.

How to Choose an Air Compressor For Your Needs

A gas powered air compressor can be a great investment for your household or workplace. Air compressors can be gas or electrically powered depending on the model you choose. They are available in a variety of horse power variations from 3/4 to 5 or larger depending on how much power you need.

Typically a 2hp compressor would work for most households or workplaces. Also, air compressor tanks come in various sizes, typically ranging from about 7 1/2 to 20 gallons. Gas powered compressors can be a great benefit if you are working in an area where an electrical connection isn’t available such as a campsite, building site, or outdoor events.

This device can be extremely useful at home or work, as they can be used in a variety of ways. When it comes to home improvement, a gas powered air compressor can be a useful tool in getting the job done due to its many air tool attachments. These attachments have very few working parts and are virtually indestructible if properly cleaned and maintained. Also, because they are powered by air, they run cool and have a longer life expectancy than electrical tools. Available attachments include staple gun, blo-gun, sander, nail gun, sandblaster, and more.

Another benefit of a gas powered compressor is that it can be used as a portable air pump. It is a quick and easy way to inflate tires on your car or bike. This is an essential tool to have if you are working in an auto or welding shop, or just enjoy working on cars in your spare time. Changing your car tire is made simpler with this machine as well, as you can attach an air gun which removes lug nuts quickly and with no effort.

An important factor to consider in the purchase of your model is a certification by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). This is the only quality control standard for these machines and some compressors don’t come with this certification.

A machine with an ASME label is held to a higher standard of quality and safety. The best place to purchase a gas powered air compressor is online because of the large number of product reviews for each make and model. These help you make an informed decision based on prior customer recommendations. Also, these machines are widely available at hardware stores nationwide. With adequate research you can find the make and model that is best suited for your needs.

How to Use a Cable Splitter

Cable Splitters are used to divide an incoming signal or a cable so that it can be used to send signals to two or more than two components. For example, if there is a single cable television line coming into a home, a cable splitter can be connected to the cable line so that the cable television can be provided to two or more televisions. They can also be used for connecting multiple devices to a television such as connecting a VCR and a DVD Recorder simultaneously to an input such as an antenna or a cable feed.

However, many people get confused how to connect a cable splitter to their incoming cable lines or other components. The first step for home users is to identify the location on the incoming feed where they want to install the splitter. The location must be chosen keeping in mind the functionality of the splitter. For example, if the incoming signals have to be split into two stories of the same house, one should look at the outside of the home and choose a location from where the signal can be conveniently divided among the two stories.

For locations outside the house, the most convenient place on the incoming signal wire would be the inline junction which connects the outside signals to the signal wire leading into the house. A splitter can be easily installed at this location. After you have identified the location, see the cable splitter for the ‘in’ and the ‘out’ label. All cable splitters are labeled with these words. These labels tell the user where to put the input wire and point from where the output signals will emanate.

The input wire is connected to the ‘in’ port. The connection can be made easily. The bare input wire is inserted into the ‘in’ jack. After that, the outside part of the plug is turned towards the right so that the input wire is firmly inserted into the jack. After the input wire has been connected, the components to which the signals have to be sent are connected in the output ports.

These are the components on which the output of the signals is displayed. Output components include televisions and other audio visual gear. The connections of the output components are made to the output port the same way as connections are made to the input port.

Workshop Safety is First

As a hobby or past-time, woodworking has many inherent dangers and that is why workshop safety tops the list.

Just about everything you work with is stronger than your skin and bones including the wood itself. With that in mind, think about the fact that the tools that you use to work with the wood are designed to cut, rip, and otherwise tear this wood.

This is not said to scare you away from woodworking, rather it is just make sure that you have complete respect for the tools you use and the safety in your workshop.

Most workshop safety issues really aren’t from an accident with a power tool, rather they are little things that accumulate over time that involve your eyes, your hearing, and your breathing.

So, with that in mind, let’s take a look at some workshop safety tips as they relate to your eyes, your ears, and your lungs.

Eye Protection:

When it comes to workshop safety, nothing is more important than protecting your eyes. Woodworking is always going to produce dust and even wood chips that will constantly be flying around. Not wearing eye protection is just not an option. If you don’t… it’s not a matter of if something bad will happen… it’s when.

Safety glasses are easy to have around and they are comfortable to wear. Many of them have open sides to them but protect your eyes from a direct assault. You can find safety glasses with side protection and you probably should because your eyes just aren’t worth risking.

Goggles offer eye protection that is a level up from the glasses since they fit tightly against your face. Safety goggles can be a bit more cumbersome to wear and have the tendency to fog up if you’re sweating or the humidity is high.

Face shields aren’t necessary for the lion’s share of woodworking projects unless you’re working with something that really throws chunks of wood around and you need to protect your entire face from getting slapped around with wood chips.

Ear Protection:

Earplugs are easy to find and inexpensive for workshop safety, but getting them to fit properly can be a bit problematic. If they don’t completely block your ear canal, then they aren’t effectively doing their job so make sure you have them tightly fitted.

Ear Covers or earmuffs are devices that cover the entire ear and look very similar to headphones. Ear covers will reduce the damaging noise better that the plugs, but since they fit tightly over your ears they can be somewhat uncomfortable to wear over a period of time.

Lung Protection:
When it comes to workshop safety there is always dust and fumes present in your environment and that’s why it is essential to invest your breathing protection.

The quickest, easiest, and most inexpensive are the simple white dust masks that you see all the time in all the home centers and hardware stores. With such protection so easy to find and cheap to buy, you should never be without them.

Respirators not only filter dust, but they filter fumes as well. If you’re going to be working with finishes or compounds that produce heavy fumes, then you should invest in an actual respirator device. These can be found at most all home centers.

With workshop safety, when it comes to your eyes, your hearing, and your lungs, there is no excuse not to take the proper precautions. Remember the damage you do won’t necessarily be immediate, rather it will be cumulative. The protection is inexpensive and easy to find… so use it.

Tips on Making Your Homemade Wood CNC Router and Its Benefits

Building your own homemade CNC router could be a rewarding and fulfilling experience for you. Aside from the great experience, building a homemade CNC router would also cut down your costs and save you a lot of money. It can also give you the chance to unleash the creative side of you since you will have your own hands-on experience in designing the router that you want. Doing so would not only make you feel like a superman but also would give you the right router that would suit your taste.

Yes, this experience of making your homemade CNC router is fantastic but it is better to understand what it is. Basically, CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control. Thus, it is a device or a router which could be in a form of cutter; welder or any tool that a person wants to use is controlled by a computer in either x/y axis or x/y/z axis. CNC router tables or commonly called CNC routers are very helpful in woodworking. As long as the programs or the CAD programs are properly instructed, any image or pattern can be reproduced easily. Also, they have the ability to make intricate patterns and even a three-dimensional pattern. Gone are those days when people thought woodworking is very laborious and intensive.

For most people especially for small-scale woodworking shop owners or for fathers who are just fond of woodworking, buying this would draw a huge chunk of their pockets. It is true. Buying a CNC router is indeed a good investment but it costs a lot and it is unthinkable for small-scale business. However, building your own homemade router is possible. It might be a little difficult since you have to understand how it works and the technicalities but you just have to think about the benefits.

There are many homemade CNC routers kits and plans available on the internet. These kits might be good but the problem sometimes is when you lose one part of the router. It would be difficult to look for the missing or broken parts since you bought it in a package. It is then suggested that you ask people with knowledge on how to build this router. Leave a question on the internet and after several hours you can get the answers that you want. There are also how-to books. Doing research about it is not a bad idea and the knowledge that you get from those researches would have a great impact on your end result.

Indeed, the steps to follow in building a homemade CNC router could be intricate and difficult. Yet, by the end of your project, you would be surprised that your hands-on experience really gave you a heads up on making your homemade router.

Using a Stump Grinder For Complete Tree Removal

If you have to remove a tree from your yard it is a step-by-step process which doesn’t necessarily require experience but you do need to know what to do. Eliminating the stump is usually the most difficult part of tree removal. Using a stump grinder is sometimes easier than trying other methods like salting the stump.

Cost

Removing the last and most difficult piece of a tree might cost a bit. Professional landscapers usually charge according to the size of the stump. Renting equipment generally will run about $100-$150 for the removal of a 24 inch stump. You can rent gas-powered machines for about $100-$200 a day, depending on the size of the machine. So, if you only have one or two stumps to remove it might be economically wiser to just hire a professional. If you have more than two stumps or want to share the rental machine with a neighbor, renting is probably the best way to go.

When renting machinery make sure the dealer explains how to use the equipment in detail. Check the controls and make sure you fully understand how to safely operate the machine. Above all else, make sure it works before you take it home!

How To Use the Stump Grinder

1. Use a chainsaw to cut as much of the stump off as you safely can.

2. Get to know the parts of the tree stump grinder and read the directions on how to operate the model you are using. Understand the basics of the machine. The control panel is where you will find the ignition and the controls for operation. Locate the blade that chops the stump and the hydraulic lever that raises and moves the grinder wheel.

3. Remove all possible hazards from your work space to avoid possible physical injury or damages to the wheels.

4. Situate the grinder directly in front of the stump. Raise the grinder wheel a few inches above the stump but stay close to the edge of it. Use the grinder wheel to position the grinder and lower it on to the stump. Move the machine side to side to remove wood chips and continue the process until the stump is removed.
